This month’s pictures are mostly about an Amtrak trip from Yuma to LA to Portland to Chicago to Denver with several stops in between. We were going to continue from Denver to San Francisco to LA and then back to Yuma, but we couldn’t take any more Amtrak.and flew home from Denver even though the rest of the trip was already paid for. Two things to think of when you consider an adventure by rail in America – first is that Amtrak is perpetually and almost always tardy. And I don’t mean 20 or 30 minutes; they are hours late. By the time we got to Pasco, Washington we were cumulatively more than 24 hours behind schedule. We were supposed to be in Chicago at 1700 and arrived 0300 the next day and wasted a reserved pricey hotel room where we didn’t actually even get 8 hours to sleep. The other factor is that the service and facilities are very uneven. While some staff were conscientious others were unconcerned to the point it seemed malicious. And sometimes, not always, the trains were absolutely filthy. So think twice before thinking it will be fun.
