Lauderdale County Enterprise – June 10, 1904 On Saturday evening eight miles south of Ripley in the 1st Civil District of Lauderdale, Will Carrigan, white man, age 23, allegedly shot and killed another white man, William Delaney. Delaney was away from home on business, and on his return found that his daughter, Mrs. Spiller, widow of the late John Spiller, had gone with Carrigan to fish in the creek nearby. Enraged, Delaney who had forbidden his daughter to keep company with the young man, followed, armed with a piece of timber. He threatened Carrigan and Carrigan drew his pistol and shot him. In a preliminary hearing before Justices C. S. O. Rice and W. H. Cole, Carrigan was aquitted of murder, but was bound over to Circuit Court for carrying a pistol, and was freed on $250 bond. Carrigan is a man without family, and Delaney had two children. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon.
William & Ethel Carrigan were owner-operators of the Carrigan Grocery at 1509 South 22nd Street Tampa, Florida.
Ethel Carrigan is buried in the Bloomingdale Community Cemetery, 3301 Bloomingdale Ave., Valrico, Florida. Although William A. Carrigan’s name is also on the tombstone, he is actually buried in Ripley, Tennessee.
